Last night, went to Lyric Theatre's first night of the first show of their summer season, BYE BYE BIRDIE. It was a a ton of fun, in the only way 1960's musical comedy can be- dammit, what a good time! And so much fun to see a professional production of a show that's been beaten to death in high schools across America. If you're in OKC, buy a ticket!
That's me, with my date for the evening, Jessica. She's not only the prettiest lady in town, she's also my favorite actor in town!
Another Jessica I know- the one I call 'Baby' Jessica, called me up to ask a favor. Yeahp- so that's my segue- one Jessica to the next-
Baby Jessica called me up, to ask a favor...
Along with her father, she was doing something for a charity. They were having some kind of benefit, a party and auction. They were supposed to decorate a plain wooden birdhouse. At the benefit, all of the birdhouses, that different people had decorated, would be auctioned off. They had no clue what to do- so she called to ask if she could bring it over- for me to decorate.
Of course I said, "Hell YEAH!"
Here's what I came up with:
As I dived into this project without any plan of attack, it took much longer than it should've... but it ended up working out in my favor, as there was a nice layer of paint on it before I came up with the plan of attack!
First, the entire birdhouse was painted with a coat of off-white fitty cent pain from Wal-Mart. After lots of staring at the thing, I smeared and rubbed some dark brown and light brown paint in random streaks. (More fitty cent paint from Wal-Mart.) At this point, it looked like a huge mess. More like a birdCRACKhouse. So I attacked it with some Vintage Photo Distress Stain. That didn't help in the attractive department, either. I thought, maybe it needs some color. That's where the bright blue came to be in the spaced between the 'boards,' and where the door was painted red. In honor of my Grandma's favorite perfume? I don't know.
As I was staring at my shelves of product. I grabbed the little bottle of Mr. Holtz's Antique Bronze Crackle Paint. I randomly slapped thick patches of the crackle paint around the house. Now, this isn't a tiny birdhouse that fits in the palm of your hand. It's pretty damn big. And I was sure I'd use the entire jar of crackle paint. Nope. Didn't even make a dent in it- looked like it was still more than 1/2 full. (Optimistic, aren't I?) Seriously! I'd been "takin' it easy" on the crackle paints, because I was afraid of running out too soon! Let this be a lesson- there's more than it looks, and it goes farther than you think!
And that's where I called it a night. I left the birdhouse to dry for the night.
When I returned to my project the following day, the crackle paint had - well, you know- it did what the name implies. IT CRACKLED! Beautifully. I rubbed some Walnut Stain Distress Ink into the cracks, just as his highness, Mr. Holtz, has taught us to do.
Here's where the embossing comes in- I just felt that I want to melt some embossing power on the thang. I used the 'Aged Copper' from Stampendous. I love that way this stuff looks. I dumped it around the edges of each window and blasted it with the heat gun.
To finish up, I smeared some Walnut Stain Distress STICKLES around the edges of the roof, door, and anywhere else that looked neglected. I superglued the gear and game spinners to the very front top of the roof. I superglued the Idea-ology 'Ornate Plate' over the hole- wait, what's that called? The 'Bird-Door?' I don't know. I also superglued a game piece above the door, as a house number.
It still didn't look 'finished,' to me. My basket of tapes caught my eye. I grabbed a few rolls of tissue tape and stuck two small pieces to the front of the house- there on the windowsill and a piece right above the window- which mostly became transparent when I smeared it with ink and glue. After attaching more strips of tissue tape to the 'ground' around the house, like some kind of walkway or 'yard,' I was DONE! I delivered the house to Baby Jessica's Dad the following morning! I've yet to hear what it sold for, in the auction at the benefit. Part of me doesn't want to know. I'm happy with my daydream that it went for thousands of dollars and the board of directors are speaking of me in hushed, reverent tones and announcing me as the one who singlehandedly supported their cause...

Dollar Tree Treasure Box!
Earlier today, while suffering through an especially horrendous day at work, I spent some time cruising around one of my favorite online hangouts- the forum at SCRAPBOOK.COM. On my favorite forum, one of my favorite online scrapbook personalities, Miss Henri, was writing about her family's Easter plans. In a matter of minutes, I decided that *I* needed an old-fashioned childhood Easter, too! I quickly e-mailed my Mom with my demands. On my lunch hour, I ran out to buy some EASTER SUNDAY supplies!
I decided that I would be in charge of table decor and Easter baskets for all of my Easter Sunday participants. Willing or not, my Mom will hide my (soon to be) beautifully colored eggs and willing or not, my friends will hunt for these eggs!
I headed straight to DOLLAR TREE. That's right- The Dee Tee!
I bought six baskets, a vase, six chocolate bunnies, and many rolls of ribbon- in different colors- I couldn't decide if all baskets should have the same colored ribbon or if each should be a little different...
While staggering through the aisles, I spotted something- YES!! One of my favorite things is back in stock at the Dee Tee!
What is it?!
PLAIN. WOODEN. BOXES.
I LOVE these things! Around Christmas, I found lots of them - and once I'd fixed them up a bit, used them to 'wrap' Christmas presents. I put the present inside, then tied a classy black string around the box. Very simple, but looked great. Then, the person got their present AND a nice box they could use to store jewelry, money, or pills or other medicinal/birth control needs.
So how did I fix them up? With some acrylic paint, scrapbook paper, and some Mod-Podge!
Here's one box that I made for myself. No, I don't use it to store contraceptives. Silly. I use it to hold my spare Cricut blades!
Ain't that purty? I love that paper from My Mind's Eye. I need to find more!
Here's another view:
Yeahp. Cute. And so cheap. Dollar for the box, then just a piece of paper from your stash!
I have so much fun making these, that I'm gonna go make another right now!

An Altered Box, A Few Cards, A Rough Day
Alright, I know- last night, I promised I'd show you some cards, today. Is 8:30pm still *today*? Technically, yes. But it doesn't feel like it...
Today was one of the worst and craziest days of my life. And I've lived a rough life.
Anyways- there will be cards, I know you were all holding your breath for some cards! Haha. But first, here's a little box that I made. Oops, I mean, a box that I ALTERED.
It was a plain little paperboard box that I pieced up at Michaels for fitty cents. Yes! That *IS* one of the new 'Faucet Knobs' from Mr. Holtz, thanks for noticing! I bought a package of the faucet knobs on Saturday. As soon as I bought them, I knew exactly what I was gonna do with the first one- attach it to this little box!
Here's a a shot of the top, so's that you can fully appreciate the beauty that is Tim Holtz's knob:
Isn't that terrific?! Only four for eight bucks, though. Kinda expensive. If you wanna use lots of these little jewels, you'll definitely hafta turn a couple extra tricks, oops, I mean: work some overtime. I covered the top of the box, as you can see above, with a Martha Stewart 'Precious Metals' paint chip from Home Depot. I picked up lots of them- they're so cool! A square with no printing, and it LOOKS like metal! And they're free. So that kinda helps cover the cost of the faucet knobs.
I rubbed some white acrylic paint on the sides of the box with my finger, then dirtied it up with some Vintage Photo Distress Stain. I covered the edges of the lid with some Tissue Tape- the new 'Commute' set! Aaaaand rubbed some more Vintage Photo Distress Ink on it, before stamping my initials with my letter stamps.
Cute box, huh? I'm happy with it- and it's the perfect size for a few contraceptives or your 'nighttime pills' if you keep it on your nightstand. Or keep it on your desk for your 'daytime pills.'
Okay, okay, okay- it's time for cards cards cards!
Well, time for cards cards. I only made two.
First up:
I embossed a piece of Distress Core'dnations (don't know if I'm spelling that right and not in the mood to research) then swiped some white paint over it, before stamping a square of kraft with a cute background stamp. Love those circles. The typewriter stamp was found at Basket Market. I don't know who made it- but it's cute. The 'paper' with the type on it says 'old school.' This would be a nice card to send to someone you went to school with, to let them know how terrific your life is going, and that you hope everything's working out well for them and their five kids and dirty house.
Here's something a bit more colorful:
I finally got a piece of Kraftcore paper. It's every bit as wonderful as you imagined it would be...
I embossed it with the Tim Holtz gears folder, then sanded it up- ain't that kraft a beautiful thang? Seriously. Does anything look better than kraft?
The gears were cut from the Gadget Gears die, from more 'Precious Metals' paint chips from Martha Stewart. Look! Looks just like metal!
I love these paint chips! I've gotta get more! Home Depot, here I come!
Please, pray that I survive my work tomorrow. ALSO- I want to thank all of you that have been reading and leaving such nice comments. They really make me smile, and when I see how many people are viewing each day, it just makes my head spin. Thank you so much!
I'll be back tomorrow with my 'first draft' Spring Pennant! Yeahp, SPRING PENNANT FIRST DRAFT TAKE TWO: POST WINE DISASTER.
